Emergency closure info

At Hazelwood Academy we aim to keep the school open in all but the most severe weather conditions. However there are times when it becomes necessary for a decision to close the school at short notice.

Our key considerations would be:

·         Can children and staff get safely to school?

·         Can required staff/student ratios be maintained?

·         Is the school site safe for children and staff?

·         What is the advice of the Police and the Local Authority?

To make these assessments we begin work by inspecting the school site early, checking the heating and gritting the main paths and steps. All staff will need to be contacted to confirm their attendance

If the site is to open we encourage children, parents and visitors to keep to the treated pathways and avoid any areas in the school that are untreated.

However if it is necessary to close the school due to adverse weather conditions, notice will first be given on local radio. Therefore parents should listen to their local radio stations and check the website :

·        HeartFM  -  Http://

·        BBC Wiltshire

We will also issue regular text messages to keep parents updated and to confirm school closure.

Our Website will be amended to read

“School Closed (DATE) due to severe weather”.

Finally, on some rare occasions, it may be necessary to send children home early.

We ask that all families have arrangements for such emergency closures and that the school is kept up-to-date with changes to emergency contact details to ensure we can contact parents easily.
